Hello from Siberia! You are welcomed by the municipal autonomous institution "Regional Historical, Cultural and Environmental Center" or briefly "Ecocentre".
We are trying to erase international boundaries to provide only unusual material that can encourage you to get acquainted with other values and cultures. In "Econcetre" we want to show you how original, mystical and exciting traditions of other nations can be. In doing so, we are representing our collection in many ways to tell you more about its connection with our reality, past and perhaps even future.
Therefore, some of our headings will be published in English from now on to introduce people from all over the world to unusual holidays, events and, of course, our collection!
Many sewing workers celebrate a non-official holiday - Sewing Machine Day. On June 13, 1780 Thomas St. received a patent for the design of the first sewing machine. However, It was not widely distributed due to the fact that Thomas himself was not motivated in its industrial production. However, many notes that Thomas only wanted to patent the technology for the future, because, as shown by the practice and inventors who a century later tried to reproduce his drawings, Thomas's machine did not work without significant changes in design. That’s why the patent registration date of the first sewing machine became known as unofficial holiday.
The founder of the company and inventor of the machine that we had presented to you, Isaac Singer moved to New York in 1850, where he met the designer Orson Phelps. Singer invented a new mechanism, improving the original Phelps machine. He forced the needle to move up and down, not in a circle like it was before. This principle of needle movement at the sewing machine remained in the same form in all devices for sewing to this day, so it was such an effective and modern technology. Not surprisingly, the sewing machines patented on August 12, 1851 became very popular. Especially given the fact that they could be repaired at home by ordering the right parts - a great offer for sewing machines.
Such machines have always been valued for their quality of work, not inferior to even modern models. They were capable of: sewing products from dense fabrics, easy sewing of leather things, smooth stitches on complex materials, and, most importantly, work without electricity. There was only one drawback - high price. Singer, for example, sold his first sample for a hundred dollars. At the time, it was a lot of money and clearly did not contribute to the popularity of simple housewives. But the owner managed to attract customers to the side of the company, they began to sell sewing machines by installments.
The model that we are showing you today is one of a series called "15". It was a continuation of the ideas laid down in 1879 with models called "Improved Family". They were intended primarily for the domestic and basic industrial level in the garment industry. Such machines were delivered in a special table, and the number of autonomous portable devices was small. However, the nineteenth century was coming to an end and Singer needed a change for the modern man of the twentieth century. That's how Singer 15 came about. It must be the most successful design of a sewing machine, which remained in production for over 100 years, although it has undergone a number of improvements during this time. The original Model 15, like all others before it, was sold in a basic configuration in a pedal form that you can see.
Importantly, with the Model 15, Singer introduced a new design of the needle with a flat surface on one side of the shank. This design has become almost a standard needle used not only on most future sewing machines of the company, but also on almost all other manufacturers. Models of this series were produced until the 1950s, and the shown to you dates back to the first half of XX century.
Considering the fact that this tool is made in the city of Vladimir, it is interesting to know that the first Singer's factory appeared in Russia at the beginning of the XX century in Podolsk, that is why the information about the relations between the company and our state is very interesting. This factory became very successful in Europe in the field of sewing equipment production. This machines, produced near Moscow, could be ordered from anywhere in the world, and in 1914 the production volume was 600 000 units. By the end of the same year Russia became the world's second largest manufacturer of sewing machines with a turnover of 63.5 million rubles. The Russian branch is located in a separate office on Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg, where the main office of the company "VKontakte" is now located.
However, interesting changes in the work of the company take place during the First World War. At this time, there are great changes in Singer's policy, as demand for sewing machines has fallen sharply. But the demand for threads, on the contrary, has increased. From 4 rubles and 50 kopecks the prices for threads rose to 7 rubles per reel. There was even a separate order issued within the company: «Due to the increasing number of cases of thread purchase in the company's stores, at subsequent resale at inflated prices, do not sell more than 2 reels of thread in one hand».
Military orders for a long period of time have become the main source of income for the company. At one of the factories, 86 percent of capacity was restructured to produce shells, as well as ammunition of different calibers, barrels for weapons and blades for aircraft. The percentage of capacity that belonged to the production of sewing machines was only 10 per cent in those years. That did not prevent Zinger from providing the families of conscripted officers with benefits. For example, after the war started, the wife was paid from 1 rouble and 50 kopecks to 7 roubles a month. As an additional measure, payments on loans from members of such families were also stopped.
So far, many people have noted that the old sewing machines are not known only because their efficiency, but for the aesthetics. And this «Singer» model, in our opinion, perfectly proves this statement.
